Bio
b.1984, Caldas da Rainha

Inês is an artist and writer, researcher, and earth keeper.
While her desire to be an artist was stifled by a conservative catholic upbringing, she managed to take advantage of the family's thirst for status and moved to the UK in 2003 to study Illustration and Graphic Design at the University for the Creative Arts at Maidstone, her fourth choice of studies. She spent most of her degree time enjoying freedoms she had never been awarded while living in Portugal. While she found employment in the arts management field in the classical music industry after she graduated in 2007, she continued to be interested in editorial practice and studied Editorial Management at the Publishing Training House in London in 2009, and Editorial Design at the Lisbon School of Design in 2010, self-published her first book in 2009, and collaborated with artists’ zines and worked in minor design studios.

In 2011 she gained employment with Raqib Shaw as an artist assistant, which finally catapulted her into the fine art practice and industry. With Shaw’s international and reputed busy career, Inês experienced working on high-end commercial exhibitions with galleries such as Pace New York, White Cube London and Thaddeus Ropac Paris. Soon after she started working with other artists, such as Alexandra Mir, who exhibited with Tate Liverpool and Oxford Modern at the time. She established herself as a producer and worked with Frieze, and more significantly with arbeit/arebyte on many projects, including with award-winning artist Stanza, whom Inês produced the Binary Graffiti Club Project for in London with the Barbican. She managed large communities of artists in South and East London as a studio manager and helped forming Trowbridge Gardens, a community centre with shared spaces between artists and well-being practitioners, for community support.

In 2014 Inês took the Cambridge English Language Teaching to Adults certificate, and she worked as an English Teacher for four years. It was then that her love of writing consolidated, and her editorial background surfaced again. She enrolled in the Masters in Book Arts programme at Camberwell College of Art under the supervision of Susan Johanknecht, but completing the programme at Wimbledon College of Art as a Master of Fine Arts in 2017. During this time, she collaborated with artists such as David Blackmore and paula roush and started exhibiting both individually and collectively.

From the on-set, her practice showed a strong research component, and she published her first article with the Journal of Arts Writing by Students in 2016. In 2018 she became the journal’s MA editor and in 2019 the Editor-in-chief.
Her research interests led her to win the Flow Sustainability Award in 2017 and a bursary for the GreenTech Enterprise Course at the University College London - Institute for Global Prosperity in 2018. Inês also holds a certificate in Entrepreneurial Social Innovation by the Social Business School, Cascais. She created Matéria Cíclica in Portugal in 2019, an organization that engages the local community in composting, delivers ecological education and throws ecologically minded events. She is a certified and practicing Permaculturist, managing a reforesting project in Planalto das Cezaredas and a residential project in São Pedro do Sul.

Already based in Portugal, Inês was shortlisted for the Cine-Eco Seia International Film Festival 2020 and was included in the 2020 Portuguese Emerging Artists green edition book, published by EMERGE and the PLMJ foundation. In 2021 she won a residency bursary at RAMA in Torres Vedras. She has books in some private and minor organizations collections, and at the renowned Chelsea Artist's Book Collection, and artwork at the Emerge Art Collection.

She writes for Arte Capital since 2019 and has been invited by many artists to write about their work. She is also an invited artist and educator at ESAD Caldas da Rainha and FBA Universidade do Porto.
In the last two years she has been focusing on producing and exhibiting work concerned with eco-art practices, at the conflation of science and spirituality, where geological extraction and the value of life are investigated to facilitate the creation of contemporary myths.
