CSM at Old Police Station in New Cross
On Wednesday I had the opportunity to witness a student-led initiative that was very enlightening when it comes to realising and understanding the power of location, how that changes the understanding of the artwork in them, how the baggage of the place can resonate in the work or the work embedded in the place.
It's a police station and the theme was given to be related to emprisonment as the majority of the installations were placed inside the cells, but the interesting take on this exhibition is that the work didn't need to stress the emprisonment aspect: the place spoke of it and this way the artists were able to disengage from the political because they had it as a common ground. There was also a certain allusion to the right and wrong, inside and outside dichotomy. This was made in such a poetic and experimental way, but I felt the message being really strongly socially engaging.
